The best way to keep your toilet sparkling clean

Cleaning the toilet is among the most unsavory of household chores and not everyone wants to use harsh store-bought cleaners in their bathroom. Luckily, we have some pointers on how to make your own DIY alternative that's gentle yet effective.
DIY household cleaners are great for a number of reasons. For starters, it's usually cheaper to make your own than to buy it from a store — particularly if you prefer an all-natural formula — and you have the peace of mind that comes with knowing exactly what is and what isn't in your cleaning agents. Also, you have the option to customize important aspects such as the scent or medium (liquid, powder, etc.) to your liking.

Sara McFall of My Merry Messy Life has a wonderful recipe for non-toxic liquid toilet bowl cleaner. To make her version, you'll need:
1/4 cup liquid castile soap
1 3/4 cup water
2 tablespoons baking soda
8-10 drops of essential oils
With this recipe, you can use whatever scented soap and essential oils you prefer. Lavender castile soap gives off a soothing aroma, whereas lemon, orange, eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils all have an invigorating scent.
Family Life Goals has a very similar recipe but recommends adding a little bit of cornstarch to the mixture.
Meagan Visser of Growing Up Herbal suggests keeping things simple. For her recipe, all you need is baking soda, vinegar, and a strong disinfecting essential oil of your choosing. You can find the full tutorial on her website.
For those who prefer solid cleaners over liquid but aren't fond of having to scoop out powder, Jessica from Mom 4 Real has devised a clever way to press the powder into convenient little pellets — use an ice cube tray! Drop the little pellets in the toilet, and ta-da all clean! See it work in the video below:

I like to shop for clothes as much as the next girl (except when I don't because I can't find anything that fits). Still, buying a new wardrobe can be expensive.
